The chapter elaborates a triadic concept of lifelong learning, together with two analytic perspectives, of the social organization of learning and learning individual, respectively, that point the way beyond definitional preoccupations with formal, non-formal and informal learning. The recognition of learning outcomes is considered afresh, informed by contrasting viewpoints within Europe and globally that suggest that the time for differentiating learning according to formality of context has passed. This approach has served important purposes in overcoming obstacles in the early development of lifelong learning systems but is now superseded as multi-faceted lifelong learning demands new approaches in changing ecologies of learning and social practice beyond initial schooling.
