• Education in the multi-faceted jewel of South-east Asia is made up of a rich mix of colonial legacies, high aspirations, substantial youth populations, a wide range of development levels, and a mix of religions and ethnicities that often breach national borders. Hence, the results are also mixed, from wealthy, developed Singapore, to much less developed Laos and Myanmar. Issues of corruption afflict most ASEAN member states, and governance often vacillates between centralized forms and devolution. Much has been achieved, and much remains to be done.
