• The surface of a biomaterial typically represents a very small fraction of a biomaterial, but the surface structure and composition usually differ from the bulk. Since the surface region of a biomaterial is what interacts with the biological environment, characterization of its structure and composition is essential. Specialized techniques are required to characterize the small amount of matter in the surface region of a biomaterial. This chapter describes the unique properties of surfaces and how to characterize them. Overviews of surface analysis techniques such as contact angle measurements, electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, secondary ion mass spectrometry and scanning probe microscopy are provided.
