Parkinson's disease (PD) incidence and prevalence increase with age, and survival is shortened. A single gene accounts for some cases, but most are thought to be multifactorial due to the interaction of genes and environment. Environmental factors putatively associated with an increased risk of disease include head trauma and exposure to specific pesticides (rotenone, paraquat, 2,4-D, and dieldrin), solvents (trichloroethylene), and metals (lead, iron, and manganese). Factors putatively associated with lower risk of disease include use of tobacco or caffeine, elevated urate levels, and physical activity. The global burden of PD will increase in coming decades, as the aged population increases worldwide.
