• Numerous publications are available covering specific aspects around the classification of estuaries and coasts but very few have attempted a global review of the topic. In this treatise, we synthesize the available information on definitions and classifications of estuaries and coasts, as well as the occurrence and significance of major coastal habitats from around the world. We also examine the origins of estuaries and project into the future to indicate how climate change may affect the classification of individual estuaries and coastal systems.
