Small-angle scattering techniques are useful tools to characterize the structural features of clay dispersions in different media from nanometric scale (SAXS and SANS) up to micrometric scale (SALS). The principles of the scattering for the different radiations: X-rays, neutrons and light are recalled. The formalism of scattering by lamellar particles and the different approaches to interpret this scattering are described. Some studies chosen from literature illustrate how the fine interpretation of SAS features has contributed to improve the description of the clay mineral particle dispersion state and of the gel structures. Hydration mechanisms, osmotic transition and sol-gel transition of swelling clay minerals as well as rheological behaviours of clay-mineral dispersions under shear flow are studied in different conditions of swelling. The last part of this chapter deals with the swelling of clay minerals by organic solvents and the structure of clay–polymer nanocomposites.
