  • An ocean general circulation model optimized for high resolution calculations has been developed and the parallel computational performance on the Earth Simulator is measured. The high performance parallel scientific computers are increasing their performance rapidly. The basic equations are the incompressible, Boussinesq form of the Navier-Stokes equations with hydrostatic approximation—that is, the primitive equations. These equations consist of four three-dimensional nonlinear partial differential equations with dependent variables of horizontal velocity, u and v, the potential temperature T, the salinity S. The independent variables are latitude, longitude, and depth. In order to reduce the communication time of the barotropic solver, several boundary values of each domain are sent to the neighbor's overlap region and the time evolution of the physical variables during several time steps is computed in the overlap region without data communication. By using this method, the overall parallel computation speed of this ocean general circulation model achieves 13.9 Teraflops using 3840 processors.
