Beschreibungen/Notizen
  • This chapter reveals that depression is one of the most frequently experienced and diagnosed mental disorders. It is estimated that as many as 12–25% of the population will experience a significant depression within their lifetime, and at any given time up to 5% of men and 9% of women have an active major depressive disorder (MDD). Because disorders within this spectrum are composed of a number of emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and physical symptoms, thorough assessment and monitoring are necessary to adequately treat such unique constellations of symptoms. Behavioral assessment approaches incorporate a variety of procedures to collect and review information for the purposes of conceptualization, diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring of treatment progress. Further, this distinct understanding directly informs treatment planning and monitoring strategies for use in therapy. This approach may be even more attractive in the current managed care climate, for managed care organizations often require the use of empirically supported assessment and treatment approaches. Behavioral assessments allow for clear and measurable treatment goals and lend themselves well to evidence-based treatment strategies. Overall, behavioral assessment is a centerpiece to effective depression conceptualization and interventions.
