• This contribution is based on the assumption that there is no philosopher whose biography is as indissolubly linked with the development of his work as Nietzsche. This is why the account of the several stages of Nietzsche's life, understood as important and molding factors for his thought, will include such elements as his descent from a family of parish priests, his links with the leading personalities of his time, and both his pathogenesis and its analysis by Nietzsche himself. It is against this background that the content of his philosophical works is outlined, the more important of which will be discussed more extensively. Nietzsche's fundamental theories are outlined, as well as his philosophical ideas such as the ‘superman,’ ‘eternal recurrence,’ ‘the will to power,’ ‘re-evaluation of values,’ and ‘nihilism.’ This contribution provides an encompassing image of Nietzsche as a philosopher, classical philologist, psychologist, and man of letters. At the same time it is focused on his importance as the philosopher of the modern age. Finally it deals with Nietzsche's effects on art, science, and especially philosophy, from his lifetime to the present.
