• An X-ray crystallographic study of Ca(NH 2) 2 shows that this compound exists in two different crystalline forms, α and β. The α phase, which is tetragonal, is of space group D 19 4h( I4 1/ amd), while the β form is a disordered cubic phase. The IR spectra of these two phases and their deuterated derivatives have been obtained over the region 4000-200 cm −1. Factor-group analyses have been used to interpret the observed spectra. Splitting of the vibrational fundamentals of NH 2 − in β-Ca(NH 2) 2 is attributed to dipole—dipole interionic coupling.
