The great number of cupolas and pinnacles which enliven the landscape of the roofs of Saint-Front de Périgueux Cathedral is impressive. This silhouette is due to Paul Abadie architect who worked during thirty years, from 1852 to 1883, on the cathedral. However, this is not his work, but that of the young students of the “Atelier pratique”, the Practical workshop of the École des Beaux-Arts, in the second half of the 20th century, that is the main focus of the present article. We have managed to meet a number of this artists - Jean-Claude Athané, Geneviève Bourdet and Philippe Scrive among others-, who had worked at the time at Périgueux. This story that evokes a short phase of artistic creativity in the heritage conservation is closely associated with the person of Yves-Marie Froidevaux. As Chief architect of the Historical Monuments, he was, from 1939, in charge of the heritage-listed buildings of the Dordogne department and therefore, of Saint-Front de Périgueux among others, until his appointment as Inspector General of the Historical Monuments in 1974. This brief foray into the contemporary can now be admired from up close thanks to the footbridges constructed in the summer of 2019 on the roof which lead to two of the three modern pinnacles to which this contribution is dedicated.
