• Background: To investigate the prevalence of smoking among undergraduate students at a public university and associated factors. Methods: Cross-sectional study with proportional probability sample consists of 482 undergraduated students from different educational centers of the institution. Students answered a questionnaire adapted from the study by the Brazilian Information Center on Psychotropic Drugs, with questions directed at smokers, former smokers and nonsmokers. It was studied socio-demographic and smoking characteristics. The values were analyzed by chi-square test. Results: The prevalence of smoking was 6%, with a higher proportion of smokers (p = 0.01) than males (9.0%). Most smokers (74.1%) began smoking more than 21 years of age. In addition, there was an association between smoking and alcohol consumption. Conclusions: There was a reduction in smoking prevalence among students. There was an association between smoking and male gender and alcohol consumption.
