• The article investigates the activities of a network in Berlin that aims to enable elderly people to live independently in their own homes as long as possible. The investigation covered problems and potentials of a large housing estate as a place to grow old as well as the effects of networking in a neighbourhood. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used, including spatial analyses, participant observation, structured interviews, group discussions and a questionnaire. The results show that elderly residents value the estate as a good place to live. The network definitely has a positive impact in terms of providing support in the residential setting and identifying structural deficits. Involving informal multipliers from the neighbourhood in the network’s operation represents a notable and hitherto insufficiently utilized potential.
