• As a theoretician of “pure poetry”, Paul Valéry contributed to systematize and redistribute the generic criteria around the poetry/prose binomial, to identify literature with poetry. Nevertheless, Valéry has written and published prose essays (numerous), constantly questioning the generic status of these texts. Exploring the different definitions that Valéry proposes to present his texts in prose, especially his texts on politics, the article aims to specify the object, the content and the stakes of Valéry’s terminological quest, and to identify the Valéry’s conceptions of the literary genre as well as the literature. Starting from a few borderline cases, the article also tries to question the boundaries between « contingency » production and literary production.
