  • Aesthetic code of the church hymns is specific. One of the Slovak poets and literary scholars Tichomír Milkin wrote in his study O cirkevnom básnictve (About the Church poetry) that supernatural character of Christian art is its typical feature. It is necessary to accept supernaturalness if we interpret church hymns. The study deals with connections between natural and supernatural worlds presented in the text of the hymns of Juraj Tranovský, a hymn writer who was an editor of the first book of hymns Cithara Sanctorum (1636) written for Slovak Lutheran churches. The feeling of the living God belongs to the main aesthetic principles of those songs. People believed that God’s presence coming to the natural world always brings positive quality and what more – transformation. The transformation means for subjects and objects of the visible world setting free from the “prison” of passing nature. The study deals with motives of such a transformation and with other important motives reflected God, human being, worship, the power of God, the power of the Cross and sacrifition and various demonstrations of supernatural world, which are presented in the hymns and give a picture of believes in the 17th century influencing the aesthetic code - experiencing of in Christian art of that time.
