  • Out-of-school science learning environments enrich classroomeducation in many countries around the world. Numerous studieshave been conducted on the effects of such learningenvironments, particularly their ability to promote interest. Asdifferent theories of interest were used in these studies, so far, nooverview of thisfield of research exists. Therefore, based on acomprehensive and systematic international literature review, thisarticle presents a detailed analysis of the theories of interest usedto study out-of-school learning environments. In addition, inferences regarding situational and individual interest promotionin out-of-school science learning environments are derived, clearly showing that situational interest is promoted throughthese learning environments. Considering the influencing factorsgiven in the different theories of interest, a model of studentinterest for these learning environments is then presented. Thismodel can be used to guide the development and furtherimprovement of out-of-school learning environments.
