Children with German as their second language frequently lack the linguistic support they need in school. There are better ways to help students acquire written and spoken proficiency in a second language. Although multilingualism has been a part of many elementary schools for nearly forty years, many teachers are still relatively helpless when confronted with the linguistic obstacles of multilingual classes. The following article will examine some of the reasons why the acquisition of proficiency in German and the teaching of German are so complex. (DIPF/orig.)
