The paper analyses official documents about exchanges and training of teachers abroad published in the Bulletin of the French Education Ministry. These proposals are analysed from the viewpoint "of the opening up to other people it implies, and the modes of this opening up." The following issues are regarded: "focusing on the job of teaching foreign languages, updating the knowledge as regards the country organizing the training session and perfecting the foreign language spoken and taught. The opportunities of decentring and of contacts with the foreign country initiated by the training teacher prove to be rare. The latter is often in a position to receive the knowledge. Post to post exchanges present the major advantages of introducing a real-life dimension and offering the elements likely to prepare the teacher to his or her task as a cultural mediator."
