• This study addresses issues related to the habit of reading writing in the early grades of elementary school and its importance in the construction of knowledge. We conducted this research because of the need to present quantitative diagnosis of students margin without affinity for reading, because it is intended to encourage this habit through suggestions, actions relevant methodological and pedagogical practices that will bring about positive results, an improvement in teaching and learning in public schools in Senhor do Bonfim Bahia. The methodology used was a descriptive quantitative and qualitative, and direct observation. Used as instruments for data collection, open questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and participatory diagnosis with students aiming to analyze quantitatively the profile of students in the early grades of elementary school in basic education State College Cazuza Torres as to taste the reading habit recommending strategies encouragement and stimulus for reading and adduce the importance it gives. The research involved a total of two hundred and twenty six students in different age groups between seven and fourteen years of age in the morning and afternoon shifts. Of the total 159 students were found without corresponding affinity reading a percentage of 70.3%. According to the obtained results it was found that the rate of students without the habit and love of reading is quite significant. The occurrence of positive cases was higher in the afternoon, especially in the third and fourth grades. O presente estudo aborda questões relacionadas ao hábito da leitura escrita nas séries iniciais do ensino fundamental e sua importância na construção do conhecimento. Realizou-se esta pesquisa devido à necessidade em apresentar diagnóstico quantitativo da margem de estudantes, sem afinidade com a leitura, porque pretende-se estimular o hábito desta através de sugestões, ações metodológicas e pertinentes práticas pedagógicas o que trará como resultados positivos, uma melhoria no ensino aprendizagem nas escolas públicas de Senhor do Bonfim, Bahia. A metodologia utilizada foi de caráter descritivo quantitativo e qualitativo e observação direta. Utilizou-se como instrumentos de coleta de dados, questionários abertos, entrevista semi-estruturada e diagnóstico participativo com os alunos objetivando analisar de forma quantitativa o perfil dos estudantes das séries iniciais do ensino fundamental do Colégio Estadual Cazuza Torres quanto ao gosto e hábito pela leitura, recomendando estratégias de incentivo e estímulo para a leitura e aduzir a importância que ela proporciona. A pesquisa envolveu um total de duzentos e vinte seis estudantes em diferentes faixas etárias entre sete e quatorze anos de idade nos turnos matutino e vespertino. Deste total foram encontrados 159 alunos sem afinidade com a leitura correspondendo um percentual de 70.3%. De acordo com os resultados obtidos constatou-se que o índice de alunos sem o hábito e gosto pela leitura é bastante significativo. A ocorrência de casos positivos foi maior no turno vespertino, principalmente nas terceiras e quartas séries.
