• La correspondance de Louise Cruppi et de Romain Rolland, inédite et conservée dans le Fonds Romain Rolland à la BnF, comprend des centaines de lettres échangées par les deux auteurs entre 1905 et 1925. Cet article examine les représentations de Cruppi et de Rolland, entre public et privé, qui émergent de ces lettres, afin de comprendre ce que cette importante correspondance représentait pour eux, personnellement et professionnellement. Les différences dans les identités publiques et privées d’un homme et d’une femme de lettres au début du vingtième siècle retiennent en particulier notre attention, ainsi que le rôle de cette longue amitié dans les carrières intellectuelles de ces deux auteurs. The correspondence between Louise Cruppi and Romain Rolland, unpublished and preserved in the Fonds Romain Rolland at the French National Library, consists of hundreds of letters exchanged by the two authors between 1905 and 1925. This article will examine the representations of Cruppi and Rolland, public and private, that emerged from these letters, in an attempt to understand what this important correspondence represented for them, both personally and professionally. We wish to focus in particular on the differences between the public and private identities of a man and a woman of letters in the early twentieth century, as well as on the role that this long friendship played in the intellectual careers of both authors.
