• En 1717, Alain-René Lesage fait paraître une adaptation en prose du poème italien de Matteo Maria Boiardo, intitulé Orlando innamorato , sous le titre de Roland l’Amoureux . Comme lui-même l’explique dans sa Préface, Lesage élabore son remaniement de l’ Orlando innamorato en toute conformité aux nécessités et aux goûts du XVIII e siècle. Il intervient sur l’architecture du récit, voire sur la dispositio , mais aussi sur l’ inventio  : il se base sur le principe de vraisemblance, il introduit une plus grande cohérence dans la narration, il « corrige » tout ce qui apparaît trop fantastique et irrationnel, il offre plus de bienséance dans le langage et les comportements, il modifie de nombreux épisodes dans le but de révéler sa dévotion envers la royauté et il transforme certaines aventures afin d’être fidèle au concept, très important à son époque, de la quête du bonheur. Le travail de Lesage est une réussite : son roman est lu tout au long du siècle, faisant l’objet de huit rééditions jusqu’en 1793. Même si Lesage n’a pas restitué la musicalité de l’ ottava rima ni le « rythme » de l’original, par son Roland l’Amoureux , il a contribué à faire connaître en France l’ouvrage de Boiardo et à faire goûter au lecteur français l’ ars imaginativa de ce poète. La traduction de Lesage, dont la narration brève, claire et logique se lit sans trop d’effort, a offert – et offre encore – des « moments captivants » aux amateurs de romans d’aventures et elle garde son prestige même de nos jours parce qu’elle nous livre de précieuses informations sur les goûts de son public et de son époque, ainsi que sur ses propres penchants moraux et artistiques. In 1717, Alain-René Lesage published a prose adaptation of Matteo Maria Boiardo’s Italian poem, entitled Orlando innamorato , under the title Roland l’Amoureux . In the Preface to his Roland l’Amoureux [ Orlando in Love ], Lesage explains that his translation reflects the needs and tastes of his time. So, for example, in order to adapt the Italian poem to the rules of verisimilitude and propriety, Lesage modifies the original dispositio and inventio : he introduces more coherence in the narration, he eliminates all that was too irrational and fantastic, he employs a polite language, he describes well-mannered and respectful behaviours, he changes several of the episodes to show his devotion towards royalty, and he transforms many adventures with the purpose of respecting the concept, very important during his time, of the search for happiness. Lesage’s work can be considered successful: it has been read throughout the 18th century and has been the subject of eight new editions until 1793. Even if Lesage has not reproduced the musicality of the ottava rima and the rhythm of the original, he has offered to French readers the possibility to know Boiardo’s work and to appreciate his ars imaginativa . Being short, clear and logical, Lesage’s translation can be read without too much difficulty and provides very interesting and “riveting moments” to lovers of adventure novels. Lesage’s adaptation retains its importance into our time by serving as an indicator of the public’s tastes during the 18 th century, as well as of the moral and artistic inclinations of Lesage himself.
