Orán hoy en día es una ciudad que está apenas presente en el mapa mental del mundo occidental. Aparte de los lectores de La peste de Albert Camus, poca gente sabe que Orán es una ciudad costera del oeste de Argelia. Menos gente aún sabe que, durante la mayor parte de la Epoca Moderna, perteneció a España (1509-1708, 1732-1792) y que, durante estos 260 años, fue una zona que acogió a muchos jóvenes europeos que buscaban una segunda oportunidad en el servicio militar español. Sus “sueños” se vieron concretizados de manera bien diferente de la que ellos esperaban: tuvieron que abandonar su vida pasada e instalarse en África del Norte, en una ciudad rodeada por enemigos, prácticamente aislados de la península y de su país, comiendo las raciones militares y ganando un salario bajo.
Annette von Droste-Hülshoff’s novel The Jews’ Beech Tree is one of the most impor- tant works of German literature. This article sheds light on the core of the book, namely the Algerian captivity of a murderer from the Paderborn area of Oran. The author’s decision to play down this aspect of her novel is interpreted result of her aim to present the protagonist largely as a victim. This would have been impossible if she had mentioned the fact that he was a deserter from Oran, a city known throughout Europe as a place where the Spanish army stationed its international regiments full of desperadoes and wanted criminals. By contextuali- sing the novel and its protagonist in the history of German soldiers in the Spanish army in North Africa and German migration to Spain in the 1760s, in addition to what is known about Oran in late 18th century Germany, new aspects can be added to a famous work of world literature.
