  • Urinalysis, previously known as uroscopy until the 17th century, began 6,000 years ago and was used as the primary diagnostic tool (Armstrong 2007). Early physicians referred to urine as a ‘divine fluid’ and saw it as ‘a window to the body’ (Rosenhek 2005). Urinalysis during childbearing has also been practised for centuries. The first known pregnancy tests were used by Egyptian women and involved urinating on barley or wheat seeds, with rapid-sprouting seeds indicating pregnancy. Currently, urinalysis is used throughout maternity care to confirm pregnancy and screen for a number of conditions that could impact on the wellbeing of the pregnant woman or her fetus (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence [NICE]
