In the Jena course catalog for the summer semester 1806, Hegel announced a lecture course on ,,Logic, according to my forthcoming book System of Science". Yet two years later, in May 1808, he wrote to his friend Niethammer that he had barely laid the ground for his logic in Jena,
and that it was only now beginning to take shape. What, then, was the ,,logic" of 1806 that was ready for publication? And why did Hegel come to think that it was ungrounded? This paper sheds light on these questions by examining the origin of Hegel's conception of a speculative logic, and
by tracing its various metamorphoses prior to its final publication in 1812-16.
