  • When I was in Shanghai, I never thought that I would come to America someday. The word "America" meant almost nothing to me then. I knew it was a far distant country and one could get there only by plane. My aunt was in America. She often wrote to me saying there were many pretty children in America and each and every one of them looked like a doll. She also wrote that there were many pretty clothes and goodies in America. She wanted me to study hard and said someday she would sponsor my journey to America. Although my aunt's letters were very attractive, I did not have an American dream. At that time, I felt I would be satisfied if my aunt sent me some American things.
