The frequent questions about the agency of self-learning algorithms in the field of art arerooted in various myths that clearly predate the digital age. The works that seem to havethe strongest impact on the imagination are the ones that are presented as creations ofAI as a non-human author. However, most of such works can essentially be understoodas playing with mythology, producing an illusion rather than an original artistic messageby a thinking and increasingly autonomous “alien” brought into existence by humans. Theauthors suggest that to understand what is now being presented as AI art requires theability to look at it properly. Referring to Ortega y Gasset’s classic formula, one could saythat it is a matter of gazing at it cross-eyed.
