Abstract
The medium of music in a multimodal group-analytical treatment setting is ideally
suited as a projection space for fantasies and fears. This can result in emotionally
highly complicated situations in music therapy, forming a considerable therapeutic challenge on the grounds of unconscious resistance and transference of intrapsychic
tensions in the shape of projective identification. The treatment and eventual resolution
of the pathogenic psychodynamic have been documented in a case study from
group-analytical music therapy. The description is based on Melanie Klein’s concept
(1946) of projective identification towards unconscious resistance to the emotional
pressure of intrapsychic content. In addition, Wilfred Bion’s elaborations (1961/2001)
contributed to the analysis of the process. The adequate therapeutic intervention for
the successful resolution of the projective identification was continuous containing.
The understanding of projectively identifying resistance proved to be essential for the
purpose of fear regulation and as a form of communication. Because of intensified
resonance while listening or improvising, the medium of music itself acted as a vessel
or container, offering the possibility of conscious identification. In dealing with music
therapy improvisation, previously unconsciously projected fears were consciously experienced,
regulated and led towards understanding in the communicative group process.
