Background
Medial temporal lobe epilepsy causes widespread damage to the central nervous system, thereby impairing the auditory processing mechanisms.
Aim
To study the dichotic perception skills in patients with medial temporal lobe epilepsy with and without medial lobe sclerosis.
Design
The study employed a prospective cross-sectional behavioral design. The dichotic digits test (DDT) performance of 100 patients with medial temporal lobe epilepsy (50 patients with medial temporal lobe sclerosis and 50 patients with normal magnetic resonance imaging) was compared to that of 50 normal controls. These patients were enrolled for the study while they were undergoing pre-surgical evaluation for epilepsy management.
Results
Patient groups performed significantly poorer than the normal control group. The test did not show any lateralization effect. Further, 60% of patients in both groups exhibited poor performance with reference to normal cut-off values.
Conclusion
Patients with medial temporal lobe epilepsy both with and without medial temporal lobe sclerosis exhibited affected auditory processing skill on DDT. However DDT failed to differentiate the patients' subgroups.
