After all, he says, what is a health emergency but a series of life-or-death investment decisions? The young Kenyan researcher is part of a growing number of African-born scientists taking leadership roles historically held by white Europeans. As head of the Nairobi branch of a U.K.-Kenyan medical research collaboration, Barasa has been a key part of a team advising his country's Ministry of Health on how to allocate its limited resources during the pandemic. He and colleagues have also been investigating one of the pandemic's most intriguing puzzles: why Kenya and some other African countries appear to have fewer cases and a milder form of illness than many parts of the world.
