• The title compound, {[Cu(C8H4O4)(C10H8N2)(H2O)2]·2H2O}n, contains chains of copper(II) centres bridged by bipyridine ligands along the b axis. The chains are bridged by phthalate dianions, forming a recta­ngular grid complex. Each CuII atom adopts a slightly distorted octa­hedral geometry, being coordinated by two N atoms of 4,4′‐bipyridine, two O atoms of phthalate dianions and two water mol­ecules. Twofold axes are located along the copper–bipyridine chains and through the phthalate dianions.
