Throat tumours arise from the nasopharynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx and larynx. HPV is strongly linked to laryngeal tumours and EBV to non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma of nasopharynx. The prevalence of these tumours in blacks living in Africa is not known. This is a 5 year (January 2009–December 2013) retrospective study of the pattern of throat tumours seen at OAUTHC, Ile-Ife.
Archival materials were retrieved from the histopathology laboratory based on histopathological records of Morbid Anatomy department of OAUTHC. Haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) stained slides of representative blocks were viewed and reclassified using WHO classification of laryngeal and nasopharyngeal tumours.
Sixty cases of throat tumours were diagnosed within the study period. About 42.3% were benign while 57.7% cases were malignant. There was male preponderance in both benign and malignant cases. Male: female ratio was 2.2:1. Epithelial tumours made up 91.6% followed by haematolymphoid (5%) and soft tissue tumours (3.3%). The most common malignant tumour was non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma of nasopharynx (30%) followed by moderately and well differentiated squamous carcinoma of larynx (8.3% each) while adenosquamous carcinoma, basaloid squamous cell carcinoma, high grade NHL, low grade NHL, MPNST, and sarcoma botryoides made up 1.6% each. The most common benign tumour was squamous papilloma (25%).
Further studies relating these tumours to viruses like EBV and HPV are ongoing.
