  • Abstract only Biotech and pharmaceutical companies recruit postdoctoral researchers to perform cutting‐edge research beyond the scope of the designated program. A postdoctoral position in industry provides a young scientist an insight into the world of applied scientific research, as well as into the management lifestyle of industry, which differs tremendously from that of academia. It also offers the opportunity of conducting scientific research using state‐of‐the‐art research facilities and interacting with an extremely diversified team of talented scientists, engineers, and business professionals. Financially, industrial postdoctoral salaries are considerably higher than their counters in academic programs. But most important of all, an industrial postdoctoral position offers the candidate exposure inside the company that might lead to a permanent position. However, it is important to know that many companies do not view their postdoctoral programs as recruitment tools. Research is usually focused on an aspect related to commercial technology, and publications delayed to ensure proprietary information remains private. As a result, the scope for future job hunts might be narrow. In summary, an industrial postdoctoral position offers a candidate the industrial experience and leadership potential they will need for landing a position in industry but is not without its own disadvantages.
