Oral reasoning in unplanned discourse is described by an inductively derived typology of types of reasons developed from data collected in a series of discourse studies. The basic core of reasons identified remained constant across ages, individual styles, situations, cultures, and populations. The frequency of types of reasons changes with each of these. One new type of reason was added with age, one with an academic situation, and one with culture.
