Several variables have been investigated in an attempt to find a remedy for what's been dubbed "Steve Blass Disease" or the sudden loss of ability of baseball players to throw accurately. It's also been referred to as the "yips" in golf and as "choking under pressure." Examples of several high-profile athletes are used to illustrate this phenomenon. The findings of academic research studies relating to focus of attention and reinvestment of conscious processing reveal several interacting factors. These have been largely overlooked and likely can be used by practitioners in helping athletes to overcome slumps and to regain optimal performance levels.
