Karl Mannheim's pioneering work in 'The Problem of Generations' (1923) provides theoretical underpinning for this article's examination of notable examples of French collective filmmaking. Offering in-depth analyses of three key periods (1930s, 1968 and contemporary) in French collective filmmaking, the article will employ Mannheim's insights in order to determine whether they can be seen to constitute and/or to represent distinct generations. Foregrounding continuities and differences between the posited 1930s, 1968 and contemporary generations, drawing on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, the article will also give significant emphasis to questions of intergenerational transfer. Highlighting problematic aspects of Mannheim's conception of generation, the article will explore the extent to which it can help us to understand the transformations that French collective filmmaking has undergone over its history.
