Beschreibungen/Notizen
Although early 19c Germany lacked completely the preconditions for sporting heroism, Friedrich Ludwig Jahn achieved national fame from about 1810 and is remembered today, in the former GDR as well as the Federal Republic, despite being regarded as a progenitor of volkisch and fascist weltanschauung. Presents a study of Jahn as a real person rather than as a myth, asking what he did himself to contribute to his fame. Examines Jahn as inventor of Turnen, the German equivalent of English sport at this time, stressing the role of the Turner as a social movement. The conceptual tools are derived from Weber's theory of charisma.
