  • Fusion welding of cast iron is well known to be very difficult. However, it has been reported that the joining of similar materials such as grey cast iron and spheroidal graphite cast iron is possible using friction welding without carrying out special heat treatment. This is because the friction welding process possesses superior characteristics of grain refinement and in the initiation of compressive residual stress at the surface layer zone. For this study, the joining of dissimilar metals of cast iron and austenitic stainless steel was carried out by friction welding and the selection of the appropriate joining parameters was considered. Austenitic stainless steel SUS304 and spheroidal graphite cast iron FCD450 were used as the test specimens, and friction welding of these dissimilar metals was carried out. Fusion welding of cast iron is well known to be very difficult. However, it has been reported that the joining of similar materials such as grey cast iron and spheroidal graphite cast iron is possible using friction welding without carrying out special preheating treatment. Austenitic stainless steel (SUS304) and spheroidal graphite cast iron (FCD450) were used as the test specimens, and friction welding of these dissimilar metals was carried out.
