Postmodernism is characterized as distinct from, yet related to, modernism and antimodernism. Bernard Rands's 1989 orchestral composition ... Body and Shadow ... exhibits qualities of all three aesthetic attitudes. In particular, a recurring diatonic melody in the second movement is treated in ways that suggest modernist pitch-class consciousness, antimodern tonality, and postmodern eclecticism. The work's mixture of diverse techniques and ideas make it quintessentially postmodern.
