The quest for eco-friendly synthetic routes for the development of nanoparticles has reinforced the use of functionalised flavones. In this study, zinc oxide nanoparticles are synthesised by chemical precipitation and functionalised with eco-friendly flavone (chyrsin) to develop green synthesis method. The morphological, structural and functional properties along with elemental composition were confirmed by Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) techniques. The colorimetric sensing ability of zinc oxide nanoparticles functionalised with chrysin (ZnO-ChR NPs) for detection of humic acid (HuA) was studied using UV-visible spectrophotometer. The change in absorbance with change in colour of solution (changing from yellow to white) indicates the good efficiency of nanoparticles. The activity of ZnO-ChR NPs as a rapid colorimetric sensor was sufficient for detecting the biomass in soil and fertiliser content. Thus it can be determined in the future following this method.
