If the Sontag of the 1960s is against interpretation, in the 1970s she turned on style itself. Rhoads's discussion seeks to pinpoint further the stakes of Sontag's change of heart, to understand her ultimate subordination of manner to matter as linked to an array of concerns she wrestled with throughout her writing career. It is also suggested that Sontag's ideological transformation can be read as a response to the sexual revolution just s it was shifting from the heady idealism of the 1960s to the garish affectations and irreverent fads of the 1970s. In seeking to achieve her goal, Sontag uses her critiques of Leni Riefenstahl and Diane Arbus to assert her own relevance as a writer demystifying the body from its cultural and political distortions.
