• It is nowadays generally agreed that in a sentence such as (1), following meets all semantic and most syntactic criteria for prepositionhood: (1) my father, who was convalescing following a severe leg wound. Semantically, it is basically synonymous with the established preposition after, and syntactically, it combines with the following noun phrase to form a phrase with the function of an adverbial of time, which is typical of preposition phrases. An alternative interpretation making it a modifier of the subject is blocked by the facts that a relative pronoun cannot be modified and, more importantly, that who in this sentence, being coreferential with my father, cannot be viewed as the (understood) subject of follow(ing).
