Operating characteristics of a three-phase, voltage-controlled delta inverter with vector pulse width modulation are described. In certain applications, the delta inverter, which is based on three semiconductor power switches and three freewheeling diodes only, may represent an attractive alternative to the traditional bridge configuration. However, in general, the performance of the delta inverter is inferior to that of the bridge inverter. Therefore, the employed control strategy should make the best of the limited capabilities of the inverter. The popular vector pulse width modulation strategy for bridge inverters has been adapted to the delta inverter with positive results. Analysis, simulations and laboratory experiments are presented.
