This essay presents a rereading of two of the most famous novellas of historically documented criminal cases. Through close examination of Friedrich Schiller's Der Verbrecher aus verlorener Ehre and Heinrich von Kleist's Michael Kohlhaas, this essay unfolds a configuration of literature and epistemological perspectives by giving special attention to literature's own position as a form of knowledge. Following the discursive practices of citation in the two novellas, this essay shows how, around 1800, distinctions developed between literary, historical, and casuistic forms of writing, and thus contributes to a broader investigation into the emergence of the case study as a genre and its literary and historical figurations.
