The history of allegory's repression by the symbol and its displaced and subversive return appears, until the present time, to be strongly connected to the artistic work in literature, as well as in the fine arts. In analyzing the use of allegory in the works of Caspar von Lohenstein and Johann von Goethe, Campe examines the split and the link that exist between linguistic meaning and aesthetic form within the allegory.
