• To the Editor: The Current Concepts article on "Advances in the Diagnosis of Fetal Defects" (July 31 issue) 1 requires clarification. The authors state that "Despite these advantages, acceptance of routine [ultrasound] scanning. . . awaits further knowledge of its cost effectiveness and long-term safety," and cite a 1984 Consensus Development Conference on "The Use of Diagnostic Ultrasound Imaging in Pregnancy" 2 as one of three references. It is important to note that this panel recommended against routine screening, not because of concern for cost effectiveness and long-term safety, but because "the data on clinical efficacy and safety do not allow a . . . No extract is available for articles shorter than 400 words.
