• Colorless crystals of (CH 3 NH 3 ·H 2 O)PbI 3 spontaneously lose water at 298 K which triggers a transformation to the black (CH 3 NH 3 )PbI 3 perovskite in the solid state as a porous microcrystalline solid with nanoscale substructure, but the dihydrate (CH 3 NH 3 ) 4 PbI 6 ·2H 2 O) requires much more forcing conditions to produce (CH 3 NH 3 )PbI 3 .
