AMONTONS' law1 of the direct proportion between the frictional force and the applied normal load has been shown to be valid when the actual area of contact is a small proportion of the nominal area of contact. Recently2, experimental results obtained under conditions of extreme pressure (in lubrication literature bearing-pressures of at least 15,000 kgm.-wt./cm.2 are termed extreme pressures) were presented to indicate that, within the region of the validity of Amontons' law, lubricants which reduced the thermo-electromotive forces3 generated at the area of actual contact also reduced the final wear diameter produced by a revolving steel ball loaded against a metal plate.
