Phenol is one of the major products of bio-oil derived from biomass pyrolysis. Sorption-enhanced steam reforming of phenol (SESRP) aiming to produce high-purity H2 has been carried out over Ni–Ca–Al–O bifunctional catalysts. The effect of bifunctional catalyst composition (Ni content, Ca/Al ratio) on H2 concentration, H2 yield, and phenol conversion was studied. The results indicated that 5Ni-CA2.8 was the optimized catalyst, over which 98.88% purity of H2 and ∼100% conversion of phenol were achieved under the optimum reaction conditions. The 5Ni-CA2.8 catalyst also provided excellent stability for 50 SESRP–desorption cycles (∼100 h), in which the H2 concentration and phenol conversion stabilized at 98 and 100%, respectively. Meanwhile, no coke was found during the long-term stability test.
