  • In industrial applications, fretting and sliding wear can be encountered by the same friction pair depending on the working conditions. In this study, fretting and sliding wear properties of 7075-T651 against GCr15 are comparatively investigated. The kinetic behaviors were firstly analyzed in detail, then the microscopic characteristics of worn areas were examined through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS), etc. The results indicate that fretting wear is more complexly affected by normal load and amplitude than sliding wear. The amplitude boundary between fretting and sliding can be distinguished by the Rabinowicz wear coefficient. Significant increase of abrasion as well as disappear of the tribological transformed structure can be observed after the transition. •Fretting and sliding wear behavior of 7075 are comparatively studied with many parameters set the same.•The fretting wear is more complexly affected by normal load and amplitude than sliding wear.•The amplitude boundary between fretting and sliding can be distinguished by the Rabinowicz wear coefficient.•Abrasion was found intensified, while cracks and delamination reduced after the transformation of fretting to sliding.
