  • [Display omitted] •Fatty acids were extracted with supercritical CO2 and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).•Extraction kinetic parameters were evaluated for the constant extraction rate period.•Compressed LPG favored the extraction of higher amount of total oil at higher rates.•Supercritical CO2 extracted oil more concentrated in fatty acids in most of the conditions.•Oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids were some of the unsaturated fatty acids quantified. The objective of this article was to provide the extraction yields, the kinetic parameters, and the fatty acids compositions in the oil obtained from freeze-dried cells of Mortierella isabellina. The oil was obtained by supercritical CO2 (SFE-CO2) and compressed liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) extractions in different conditions of temperature and pressure. According to the kinetic curves, the mass transfer rates, and the yields of extract, 80°C/250bar (SFE-CO2) and 40°C/20bar (LPG) were the most favorable conditions. The highest yield was 4.45wt.% (LPG). According to the fatty acids composition, SFE-CO2 provided a slightly higher performance than compressed LPG. The highest concentration of fatty acids was 361mg/g oil at 40°C/150bar. Stearic, cis-10-pentadecanoic, cis-10-heptadecanoic, oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids were the major fatty acids extracted. These results highlight the possibility of using pressurized fluids to break the cells for increasing the fatty acids extraction from a lipids-rich fungal biomass.
